Basketball Victoria is hostin g a series of 3 on 3 Indigenous Basketball Tournaments during September an d October. Each tournament will have basketball action and an interactive zone with fun games and experiences.

I n 1992 the first Survival Day concert was held in Sydney. These concerts a re often staged at places with great Aboriginal significance\, for example La Perouse or Redfern. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artist s play music or dance\, there are information\, arts and crafts stalls\, a nd you can buy food and bush tucker.

Survival Day has become one of the biggest Aboriginal cultural events that is staged t hroughout Australia. In all major cities you can visit alternative concert s where mainly Aboriginal people gather.

The name Survival Day expresses the fact that Aboriginal culture is still strong a nd many Aboriginal people’s identities are positive and alive despite all what happened since colonisation

National S orry Day is a significant day for all Australians\, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities across the nation.

National Sorry Day marks the anniversary of the tabling in Federal Parl iament of the Bringing Them Home Report of the National Inquiry into the S eparation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Fam ilies\, on 26 May 1997.

National Reconciliation We ek (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories \, cultures\, and achievements\, and to explore how each of us can contrib ute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW re main the same each year\; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two si gnificant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 re ferendum\, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

Reconcil iation must live in the hearts\, minds and actions of all Australians as w e move forward\, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationship s between the wider Australian community\, and Aboriginal and Torres Strai t Islander peoples.

Mabo Day is celebrated each ye ar on 3 June. On this day in 1992 the High Court of Australia delivered a landmark decision which recognised the traditional rights of the Meriam pe ople to their Mer (Murray) Island in the Torres Strait.

Six of the seven judges upheld the claim and ruled that the lands of this continent were not terra nullius or land belonging to no-one when European settlemen t occurred\, and that the Meriam people were ‘entitled as against the whol e world to possession\, occupation\, use and enjoyment of (most of) the la nds of the Murray Islands.’

In Mabo v. Queensland (No. 2)\, judgments o f the High Court inserted the legal doctrine of native title into Australi an law. The High Court recognised the fact that Indigenous peoples had liv ed in Australia for thousands of years and enjoyed rights to their land ac cording to their own laws and customs. They had been dispossessed of their lands piece by piece as the colony grew and that very dispossession under wrote the development of Australia into a nation.

The decision was made in just less than 10 years from when the plaintiffs including Eddie Koiki Mabo began their legal claim for ownership of their lands on Mer Isl and. Eddie Koiki Mabo\, who helped lead the Meriam plaintiff’s case\, died one month before the High Court decision was made.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day (Children’s Day) is the largest national day to celebrate our children. Children’s Da y is celebrated across Australia each year on 4 August.

The Victorian Aboriginal Economic Board (VAE B) wants to hear your views on how to build a future for Aboriginal-owned businesses. This event is a follow up to the VAEB’s Aboriginal Economic De velopment in the Valley event that was held in June 2018.

We know that the government is interested in supporting Aboriginal business owners and entrepreneurs to grow their businesses\, and has been consulting with community a lot about how to do this. But we also know that what the gove rnment is doing isn’t necessarily leading to any changes on the ground in the Latrobe Valley. This workshop is about finding out why.

On the 30th July 2019\, there will be an information session for anyone who is interested in applying for the Koorie Engagement Suppor t Officer (KESO) position within the Latrobe Valley area with the Departme nt of Education and Training.

This will be an opportunity to get a n understanding and ask questions you may have about the position\, such a s work load\, areas that will be covered\, and type of work KESO’s do. You also will have an opportunity to have a short tour of the Moe Regional Of fice. This will be run by Crystal Bertoli\, the Koorie Education Coordinat or for Inner Gippsland and KESO’s in Latrobe Valley.

Blood on the Dance Floor explores the legacies and memories of our bloodlines\, ou r need for community\, and what blood means to each of us – questioning ho w this most precious fluid unites and divides us.

A choreographer\ , dancer and writer from the Narangga and Kaurna nations of South Australi a\, Jacob Boehme was diagnosed with HIV in 1998. In search of answers\, he reached out to his ancestors. Through a powerful blend of storytelling\, projection and movement\, Boehme pays homage to their ceremonies whilst di ssecting the politics of gay\, Blak and poz identities.

Blood on t he Dance Floor is a story of our need to love and be loved. Boehme’s strik ing monologue uses humour and intimacy to reveal our secret identities and our deepest fears\, seeking to invoke ancestral lineage in a contemporary quest for courage and hope.

He draws on a profound sense of all those who have gone befo re him on this land\, along with his own life experiences\, to help his au diences understand their own experiences\, reconnect with their culture an d promote cultural understanding.
